BRIEFING:
→ To perform Shula's alchemical specialty, she wears a pair of matching slave bracelets made of antimony, plated in silver to help negate the slight toxicity of the metaloid. The bracelets are then regularly coated with a thin dusting of saltpeter, which she always carries an extra baggie of. The array is woven into the thin chain work of each bracelet, covering the tops of her hands and held in place by a ring on her middle finger.

The arrays on both bracelets match and are very simple in their construction, the points of the triangles working to pull the hydrogen and oxygen in the surrounding area into the array to make it work. Inside the array's points are the symbols for the salamander (or dragon, for fire), Aries (for more fire, and the process of Calcination), antimony (to tie it to the bracelets themselves and assist in directing the flame), and the cinnabar (meaning "dragon's blood," representing fire and helping to "disassemble" the physical bonds of what she's working with to ignite them after Calcination takes place.)

The spark is made by friction against her bracelets, usually them coming together, and becoming flame from the saltpeter. The antimony of both of them helps her to control, direct, and work the size of the flam. This can be done even if she only has the use of one bracelet, but having both allows more stable control.

Re-weaving the chain links in her bracelets, they have been made to include both her fire array as well as the arrays for adding and withdrawing oxygen from the fire. The waxing and waning arrays are mirror images of each other, and work with the fire array to pull the fire in, draw the air out and kill the fire, or to push the fire out and consume more oxygen, making a very large fwoosh. Because the two arrays share one space and are connected, Shula now has greater control over the fire, starting it from a spark and directing it, then increasing the oxygen to make the fire as large as she needs it to be and in the direction she wants it, and then use the other bracelet to pull it all back and die off. This does require more concentration on her part, though it does yield better results.

In addition to her slave bracelets, Shula also now has a pair of wide brass bracelets that sit on her wrists beneath the woven ones. These bracelets have her arrays for turning sand and sediment into glass. Activating them with the same friction as she does her other two arrays, she then presses her hands into the ground. Letting the bracelets touch the dirt beneath her palms and using the brass as a conductor, the chemical composition of the earth is changed leaving a hole covered in a thin layer of glass. Using this direct hands-to-ground method will produce a hole and glass a little over two feet across and a few feet deep; just enough to slow someone down. Carving out a larger circle and then applying the alchemy, however, will now reshape that encircled area into glass over a gap up to 30 feet across and up to 20 feet deep.

Because the botanical alchemy has no tactical benefits, Shula doesn't wear the array anywhere on her person. Instead she has fashioned the array onto a clay disk about seven inches across. It is thin and doesn't weigh more than a pound, taking it with her to her office, the lab to do research or her home to tinker in her garden with it. By placing the seed in the middle of the array where the focus of it is earth, and works with time, heat, air and water to work the cells at a faster speed than they normally would, and then work again to hold them in place temporarily to get the bloom sooner and hold it a little longer before it wears off.

Alkahestry is not Shula's forte, but being around it for so many months (and being on its receiving end) has prompted her to learn what she can. It is fascinating to her and is opening many doors, meshing well with her non-aggressive nature and spirituality. Shula's use of the Dragon's Pulse to dowse for living people is far from a perfected art, but it is something that she is proud of and knows can be put to great good. With an alkahestric bindi placed over her third-eye chakra, Shula must sit somewhere quiet to meditate and wade out into the vastness of the Dragon's Pulse in order to see the energy of people. Using a map, while tapped into the Pulse, Shula can search for a person by zeroing in on their specific energy. It's easiest if it's a person she knows well enough to know what being around them feels like, but if it's someone she doesn't know (or know well), she does need something of that person's that would be connected to their life and energy, like a sample of their hair or blood. As long as that person is alive, Shula will have the potential to find them, however this is not a fast process, and exhausting; many searches will leave her with a headache from trying to sift through so much energy, and longer searchescan wipe her out enough to need to sleep it off for several hours.

SPECIAL ABILITIES:

→ Shula is skilled with general alchemy, but specializes in fire alchemy. Through
the use of the matching bracelets on her hands she is able to concentrate the hydrogen and oxygen around her and create a spark through friction. The spark ignites on the saltpeter that coats her bracelets, making a flame which she is then able to control as a small plume or a large pillar of fire. The antimony and its connection in her array help to keep her from burning herself and to guide the fire in the way she wants. Though the fire alchemy seems to clash with with her nature at first glance, it speaks more of the feelings she doesn't vocalize. This alchemy was originally designed to compliment her fire dancing, but with her grandfather's help she reworked it to give it a practical application in the military. There are several instances where Shula will not use her fire alchemy, particularly if the conditions around her are too dangerous. If she is in an enclosed space or high altitude and there isn't enough oxygen, she can't make fire; if the weather is too arid and the area around her may all catch, she won't risk it; if the area has a gas leak that she knows about she also will not risk it. She always carries extra saltpeter on her to reapply to her bracelets just in case, but if she's drenched completely it becomes harder for her to make the spark. Shula understands the destructive nature of fire and tries to not use it unless it's necessary, and unless she has to refuses to use it on another person or people; instead, she will use her fire to herd them to where she needs them and block them there.

- → Glass Floor: By taking what she's learned from both Acra and her older brother, Shula has learned to apply the heat she can create to create glass booby traps. Most soil the world over carry trace amounts of lime and various metallic minerals. By adding soda and white sand to the ground, Shula can take her spark, concentrate the flame and create glass. Because it's using up the ground that it's made over, a hole is left beneath the glass that may not be easily seen depending on the weather conditions. The glass can easily be made as thick or as brittle as it needs to be depending on how much sand and lime were put into making it, as well as how large of an area it's covering. These glass "covers" make an excellent trap as people would put their weight on the glass and fall into the small pits. While not a lethal technique, it is one that will detain an opponent or several, depending on how large the holes are and how many.

→ Flower Power: Tinkering with a theory about her own failing body, Shula has begun playing with a more cellular-based alchemy involving age, initially hoping to reverse the effects of disease by rewinding organic cells. It's proved a tricky thing, and she's been experimenting on plants and seeds, but has found that she cannot reverse the age of the cells; only hurry them forward. While disappointing (though not wholly unexpected), the results of her failed tests were quite beautiful and she began to repeat the process of urging the cells to age and cause the flowers to go from seed to bloom within minutes and keep their bloom for a few days extra than they normally would by "holding" the cells in place. This cannot be done forever, however, and nature must be allowed to run its course. The downside is that because of the rapid-aging process, the flowers will, of course, die sooner. On the bright side, because of this Shula now has a rather impressive garden started.


→ Oxygen Waxing/Waning: By weaving the symbol for oxygen into her bracelets, Shula has figured out how to redirect the oxygen that feeds the fire to either make it larger or smother it completely. Activating her bracelets and then using her left hand and bracelet as the controller, oxygen in the immediate area is forced away from the flames. It is not an instant process and depending on the size of the fire can take a few minutes before the fire has nothing left to feed on and dies out. This isn't always possible and is dependent on certain variables, such as if too much of an area is on fire, there are chemicals feeding the fire, etc. By controlling the array with her right hand, she is able to draw more oxygen to a fire, making the fire taller and wider, or by combining that with narrowing where the fire burns it will become significantly hotter. While working either waxing or waning Shula needs to devote most of her concentration into this as not paying attention could cause her to lose control and catch things on fire accidentally.

→Dowsing: Using what she's learned based on the theories behind Spade's neuro-alkahestry and through her own deep meditation, Shula has sought and found the Dragon's Pulse. Combining the knowledge she's gained from devotional meditation and what she's learned of alkahestry, Shula can seek and find specific people in several countries by using an alkahestric array whose center is "Ajna," or the symbol for "third eye." The array is placed on her forehead as a binid, and using it in conjunction with the sample from the person in question, she begins to meditate to let herself connect to the Dragon's Pulse within her and the other person, connecting them. She must concentrate on only feeling that person's specific energy though the part of them and sthen sorting through hundreds of thousands of people, looking region by region, keeping one hand connected to the map and the other to the sample. Maps must be changed out for different areas as she goes, either by herself or another person helping, and searching can take a few minutes or a few hours, but if they are alive then they have the potential to be found. The process is harmless, but as she pulls away and breaks the mental link between herself and the other person it does tend to cause her to black out, the alkahestry draining her body's energy and stamina and needing to work off the headache and sleep to bring back her energy. Since it does require a lot of concentration on her part, the array is not something she wears on her person regularly, only painting the symbol on when she needs it.
