CASE FILE: Alchemist

"Push the Envelope. Watch it Bend."
...........................................................................

FULL NAME:
→ Lucas Greeves

AGE:
→ 24

SEX:
→ Male

BIRTH PLACE:
→ Certa, Amestris

RACE:
→ Cretarian (technically)

DATE OF BIRTH:
→ 11/08/87

...........................................................................

HEIGHT:
→ 179.9cm

WEIGHT:
→ 70.8kg

PICTURE: (Pretend it's not a chick.)
Spoiler:

DESCRIPTION:
→ Lucas' body is probably the last thing someone would find intimidating. His body contains no real muscle mass, instead having the muscle toned for quick bursts of speed and maneuvering. The pale complexion over his lean body doesn't help either.

Lucas has a fine and symmetrical facial bone structure. This, combined with his warm smile and big eyes, gives him a wholesome and approachable look. He can even give off this impression while being albino. Lucas was born with this rare recessive gene becoming dominant and is unable to produce functioning melanocytes. This results in a pale complexion, bright red eyes, and off-white hair.

On any typical day, Lucas can be observed wearing a pair of auburn tinted aviator sunglasses to protect his eyes outside. He also wears a white long-sleeve and lightly dyed denim jeans. All of the clothes in his attire have light colors to prevent too much UV absorption. Finally, a pair of auburn tinted leather boots are worn on his feet, complimenting the aviators. Occasionally, Lucas will also carry around his white hooded sweatshirt. He removed the sleeves so it would form fit with his usual long sleeve shirt.

...........................................................................

PERSONALITY: INTP (Meyers-Briggs)
→ Primary Function: Introverted Thinking
Auxiliary Function: Extraverted Intuition
Tertiary Function: Introverted Sensing
Inferior Function: Extraverted Feeling

Lucas intakes information from the world around him using logic and intuition. He doesn't need to experience an event or situation in order to internalize information regarding it. This intuition when coupled with logical organization and intelligence allows for an ingenious approach to the science of alchemy. Lucas can easily understand the abstract study and conceptualize new methods for its practice, as well as rework some of the current systems into more efficient ones.

The inherent introversion makes Lucas an observer. He tends to watch events unfold and considers his decisions carefully. This does not mean, however, that the young alchemist is never impulsive. Spontaneity and impulsivity is a part of his everyday life, but the majority of the expression can be childish in nature.
Lucas usually comes off as a very cold and elusive person. He has a terrible time showing what little emotions that breech his own psyche. This isn't to say that the young man is some kind of sociopath, only that the disconnection from his emotions exists to the extent that identifying with them at this age is painfully minimal. For this reason, he does not understand the point of patronage, religion, or belief in just about anything. The world of ethics and morality are skewed but certainly not absent.

In the brain of an INTP, there is no leader other than one's own mind. Lucas is an autonomous individual. He prefers to follow and lead no one. To follow is to admit weakness and failure, and to lead is to carry another's weakness and failure as a burden.

LOVE:
→ Introspection
Logic Puzzles
Lighting Things on Fire
Destroying Property
Science
Music
Art

HATE:
→ Loud People
Animals and Insects (Not a fear, but a disliking)
Trivial Work
Idiocy
Dancing
Emotional Expression(When flaunted, it reminds the unconscious of what the conscious lacks, therefore provoking an angry or dismissive response.)

DEEPEST SECRET:
→ Lucas has a deeply rooted fear of failure and of evil. The first is self explanatory, but the latter is more confusing. He is a naturally suspicious and a slightly paranoid individual. This stems from the mind projecting its own identity onto its environment, since that is all it knows. Lucas fears that he himself is evil, and constantly overanalyzes every one of his actions to prove or disprove this. This usually causes him to behave very cautiously around people and situations regarding his vulnerability (emotionally and physically).

Moreover, there is a secret that Lucas struggles to face himself. While the previous is one that may, on the rarest of days, be told to a very close and personal friend, this secret harbors doubt even in the young alchemist's own mind. Lucas prides himself on facing the world with a rational approach and constantly remarks at how foolish others can be for allowing their emotions to control them. A painful thought occasionally lurks into his conscious. A thought he strenuously attempts not to acknowledge. He envies them, and wishes he could feel and communicate as effortlessly as they do.

...........................................................................

HISTORY:
→ Lucas was born in Certa to two lowly officers in the Amestrian military. Both of his parents died on duty before he could ever really meet them, and as a result, he was raised in an orphanage. This environment helped shape the "observer" portion of Lucas' personality. The lack of primary parental guidance also allowed the young man to become much more logical in his endeavors. It also didn't help that the other children shunned him for his albino appearance.

The first sign of Lucas' abilities in Alchemy emerged around a month prior to his tenth birthday. There were only a couple alchemists in the city, and Lucas was lucky enough to watch some of them perform the science locally. It inspired his efforts. He first learned by mimicking their work, then branched off onto his own studies. He stole books from libraries and people's bags while roaming the street.

When Lucas was just a little over seventeen years of age, he broke into a local alchemist's home to steal books for his own research. This was the first time he ever illegally entered into someone else's home to obtain his prized alchemical information. It was also the last time. Lucas grabbed a book from the third shelf, stuffed it into a leather bag he brought with him, and then jumped at the sudden bark of a guard dog. The dog chased him to the home owner's attic, where the young alchemist had to bear refuge for the remainder of the evening. When the alchemist who owned the house found Lucas the following morning, he was reading in the attic. He had found a way to bend the little light creeping in through the cracks in the boards and redirect it over the pages to read.

The alchemist who owned this house was named Benedict Falkener. He was one of two students under Samuel VanBroder, the pioneer of Alchemical Optics. VanBroder discovered how to bypass the century-old issue of additional energy compensation. Benedict Falkener went on to teach Lucas the basics and intermediaries of Alchemy, as well as the basics of Alchemical Optics, over the next three years until his leave. Ben-Ed, as Lucas called him, was on a lifetime search for his wife and child who were taken hostage by the military to encourage him to perform various experimental projects. He stayed in Certa for so long because Lucas reminded him of his son, Charlie.

Lucas remained in Certa until he turned 23 years of age, then began wandering Amestria. Because he desires autonomy, he preferred the lifestyle of the 'Drifter'. After six months of back-packing through the country and continuously heading north, he eventually stumbled onto the heavy and disastrous mountainous terrain of Briggs. The journey there seemed like more of a hassle than anything else, but the information he received in Central inquired the need for an alchemist at Brigg's military fort. Lucas had absolutely no intention of becoming a "dog of the military", but for some reason fixated on the prospects that the North could provide. If anything, it was curiosity that kept his legs going and his body moving forward.

...........................................................................

ALCHEMICAL ABILITY:
→ Lucas specializes in bending the light around him by using alchemy. This first began as a means to reduce the damage done by the sun on his skin, but as time progressed the science became fascinating. He researched the method more and more. As he hones the skills in this specialization, he will be able to completely protect his skin against UV rays.

Alchemical Optics Overview
The "Optics" specialization in alchemy deals with the manipulation of the waves and particles in light. But the manipulation adheres strictly to bending light from a target source. An alchemist can in no way create any form of artificial light in order to manipulate its properties (This is in place because the light produced from actual transmutations cannot be used. Their light is one that has an unknown composition, and thus cannot be transmuted or changed.).

An alchemist with this specialization excels in the alterations of the frequency of the waves in light, either by slowing them down or speeding them up, and alterations in the frequency (vibrations) of the molecules belonging to an object involved in transmutation (and ONLY an object involved in Optics transmutation, ie; the combination with light). In association with the waves, the particles in light (photons) will adhere to the same speed shift. By purposefully and carefully changing the frequency of certain targeted light waves, the alchemist can now focus on the true purpose of Optics: Altering the absorbed and reflected light on an object (ie: turning a red shirt into a blue shirt; the object did not change but where it usually absorbed all visual colors and reflected red, it now absorbs all and reflects blue). Those alchemists who are extremely advanced have even been rumored to concoct methods of refracting light, however none exist today in the known world.

The process for what in battle may seem simple, actually delves into incredible intricacies. The main steps to completing any basic Optics transmutation will be outlined below: (Keep in mind, advanced techniques perform these same functions as well, but with additional "bonus" steps. Rarely does a technique come along that involves isolating any of the basic steps, but it is theoretically possible.)

One (Leo ___; Decomposition through Digestion)
"The alchemist must absorb light into the specified object. Denounced by the combination of 'Phosphorous' and 'Leo'."

All forms of light are absorbed by matter in one form or another, but the alchemist must understand the composition of the object and the light itself in order to perform any transmutation. Inorganic substances are simpler than organic ones, and absorbing a certain amount of light of a specific composition requires thorough research and practice when performed on organic objects. In other words; all humans, other than the alchemist himself or any others who he physically studied for prolonged periods of time, will not be directly affected by an Optics transmutation circle (ie: if an Optics specialist was battling two other alchemists, he cannot suddenly cause one of them to absorb light and then follow through with the other steps on said person). Any humans not studied as stated do not pass this first criterion. Simply put, this step involves isolating a specific amount of light and directs it for absorption into an object.

Two (Gemini ___; Modification through Fixation)
"The alchemist must modify the molecular frequency of the target object. Denounced by the combination of 'Phosphorous' and 'Gemini'."

After understanding the composition of the specified light and the target object, the alchemist can then alter the frequency of the vibrations of the molecules in the target object. By doing so, these molecules can temporarily absorb and reflect different wavelengths. This is the step in the process which requires the most amount of energy expenditure. Every other step can function with the energy in the nearby physical environment and for centuries this obstacle was the road block preventing Alchemical Optics from becoming a reality. The block has only recently been broken (about fifty-five years). The medium to expand the Optics transmutation and harness additional energy depends on the targeted object. Surprisingly enough, organic objects offered the simplest solution. They use catabolism to break down unique molecules for energy, and by doing so, release heat. This heat can be used as additional energy for the second step and is denoted on the transmutation circles as the symbol for fire. Inorganic objects required a bit more ingenuity for a solution. Because inorganic objects are (for the most part) stable, the energy has to come from outside the target. By adjusting the transmutation circle, the heat energy exerted by the alchemist's own body can supplement this second step. Alchemists performing optics on inorganic objects must be aware of their current state of health.
(Note: This step is also the reason for the time restraint for almost all Optics transmutations. Restraints differ depending on the object.)

Three (Scorpio ___; Separation through Filtration)
"The alchemist must briefly separate the light's waves and photons before completion. Denounced by the combination of 'Phosphorous' and 'Scorpio'."

Once the molecular vibration of the target object is adjusted, the next step is to separate the light's waves and particles. This is a process that takes place within a fraction of time compared to all the others. The light must have its core separated in tiny segments, each undergoing the fourth step before passing and allowing the next segment to take part. This is done in a "turn-style" manner to diminish the necessary amount of energy to continue and simultaneously operate the fourth step, while also conserving time.

Four (Cancer ___; Union through Solution)
"The alchemist must match the light's frequency to the adjusted molecular vibration of the object. Denounced by the combination of 'Phosphorous' and 'Cancer'."

During the third step, the fourth step will begin upon the separation of each light core segment. The frequency of the waves will be matched to the complimenting frequency of the target object's adjusted molecular vibration. When complete, the union of the new wave(length) and the photons commences, and physics will resume the procedure by reflecting the wavelengths not absorbed by the target object outward and back into the environment.

Restraints
The time restraint for any Optics transmutation depends completely on the amount of heat energy offered by the organic object under affect (can include the alchemist), or the alchemist himself when dealing with an inorganic object. In other words, the amount of heat put in will result in the duration of the Optics transmutation. Since too much heat offered from the organic source can dampen the effectiveness of the transmutation, the effectiveness of later transmutations, and the overall strength/health of the alchemist, overexertion of one's own body heat is strictly prohibited unless under life and death circumstances. These rules break down the entire process:

--Where.... T = heat used from the body; t = heat lost from the transmutation; H = total heat energy; G = total energy converted from heat; E = total amount of usable energy
--T and t are measured in degrees Celsius. The human body has an average temperature of 37 degrees C, and going 1.2 degrees above or below this is considered disastrous.
--G is measured in Joules. E is measured in joules. H is heat energy measured in Joules.
--Assume the conversions from Celsius to Joules is already present (let's not make things more difficult, now).
--For every .01 degree C of heat used from the body (T), one fourth of it is lost to the environment (t).
--For every .0075 degrees of C put in (average increment for H), the transmutation gains 33.33% effectiveness worth of G.
--However, even this energy is still lost during conversion. The final effectiveness, in terms of E, is half of the effectiveness in G, or 16.66%.
--So...

t = (1/4)T
T - t = H
H = (1/3)G
(1/2)G = E

--E is the percentage that dictates the effectiveness of the transmutation. It goes without saying that more complicated transmutations, whether it be difficulty in quantity or quality/skill of the alchemy, require more body heat to start. Usually anywhere from 2-5x more.
--Every 16.33% effectiveness of E is equivalent to 1 minute in duration for the transmutation.

Alchemical Optics Stage One
At this stage, Lucas can only bend the light over inorganic objects and briefly over himself (about 3-5 seconds). He cannot sustain the transmutation over organic objects at all, and when dealing with his own body, the energy output is unstable. Essentially this allows the target object to become invisible to the naked eye (bending the visible light spectrum).

The Optics transmutation circle on his left palm is for inorganic material and looks like this: (completed)
Spoiler:

The Optics transmutation circle on his right palm is for organic material and looks like this: (completed)

REVISE

uhm...first of all...I don't know how to put this, man, but uh... your face claim is a very popular girl from Evangelion. Her name is Rei Ayanami... I did not fall off my chair laughing. You can use her. We'll just...pretend it's a guy. -nods encouragingly-

1. Love the last name! (that doesn't count as a number, but I'm making it one because that last name is so epically awesome).
2. Personality: 30 words short, but I don't care because it's engaging enough to suffice.
3. History: this is very interesting, but you need about another hundred. Just add more details, maybe be a little specific about how he came about wandering in Amestris. He should join Briggs...I don't know why but he just seems like he would really fit with Reila. ^___^ -shot-
4. Alchemic Ability: You called it! Yeah, this is insanely complicated and nearly impossible, but let's brainstorm. Okay so going off the idea of bending light... Light can be brought about via light bulbs... so maybe mess around with that concept and make it so he can create a flash of light that temporarily blinds the foe? That technically makes him invisible...technically. Also, use DETAIL. See other Apps like Dai's or Reila's for examples on how specific to be.

P.S. Sorry for the late response! You should have PMed me to bug me. All in all, I really LOVE this character.

...AKi said use detail. My mind has just been blown by the sheer AMOUNT of detail...

Okay.

APPROVED

I'll list your Face Claim as Rei Ayanami btw, just so nobody steals his ("her") face, alright? It gives you more freedom with profile graphics.

Also, don't forget to make a transmutation equipment app.
Without it, you can't use Alchemy.
